Trenton Murfin Finncial Advisor Edward Jones and Columnist for The Lewis County Scoop

Meet Trenton Murfin – Lewis County Scoop Financial Columnist

Growing Up In The Heetco Family Business

I grew up in Quincy, IL working with my Dad, Uncle, and Grandfather for our family propane business, Heetco. From a young age, I was instilled with values like hard work, perseverance, and respect. Most importantly, my family taught me the importance of treating others the way we would want to be treated, a simple idea that still makes sense in today’s complex world.

A Lifelong Passion for Business and Helping Others

Growing up in a family business, I always knew from a young age that I wanted to work for myself. I have always had an interest in business and the concept of investing really peaked my interest in college. What I didn’t realize when I started in this career was that it would help me fulfill my true purpose of helping others.

My Path with Edward Jones – From College Internship to Community Leadership

I started my Edward Jones journey in 2016 as an intern during my college years at the University of Missouri. Upon graduating with a degree in finance, I completed an extensive training program in our St. Louis Home Office. I opened the 8th branch office in Quincy, Illinois in February 2017 and have been serving my community ever since.

Life Outside the Office

I love to travel with my wife, Tammy, and enjoy spending time with family and friends. I love to golf, cook, hunt, and I am a diehard Denver Broncos fan (sorry Chiefs lovers).

Simple Steps to Smart Financial Planning: Our Three-Part Approach

Our approach is three-fold:

The Edward Jones investment philosophy consists of owning high quality investments that are diversified and held for the long-term.

Our areas of specialty include retirement planning, estate planning, preparing for the unexpected with items like life insurance and discussing your emergency fund.

We asked Trenton, “What are the most common questions or misconceptions that people in Lewis County may have about financial planning, and how do you address them?”

Probably one of the biggest misconceptions local people have is that you need a lot of money to invest or plan for your financial future and that’s simply not the case. We help families of all different financial backgrounds and situations and one of my mission’s is to provide education and personalized solutions to help you reach your goals.

Connection to Lewis County

What is your connection to Lewis County, Missouri? (e.g., Did you grow up here? Family ties? Have you worked here for a certain number of years?)
My family is from Lewis County and I still have several family members that live and work in Lewis County. My great-grandfather started our family propane company, Heetco, more than 75 years ago that I grew up working for with my Dad, Uncle, and Grandfather. I serve several clients that reside in Lewis County and try to get involved in different ways

In your opinion, what are some unique financial challenges and opportunities for residents of Lewis County?
One major challenge is lack of education around investing and financial planning. Unfortunately, this topic is not taught in schools well enough. We try to educate our clients around the plans and solutions we recommend but also feel it’s important to lay the foundation at a young age which is why I volunteer with organizations such as Junior Achievement to teach financial literacy at the grade school level.

Involvement with The Lewis County Scoop

What motivated you to become a columnist for The Lewis County Scoop?
I feel there is a tremendous lack of LOCAL news in our area. When I was approached to get involved with the Lewis County Scoop, I truly believe in their mission to get local relevant information in the hands of our community members.

What topics or areas of finance do you plan to cover in your column?
I am looking forward to covering timely topics around the markets, financial planning, and investing.

How do you envision your column benefiting the readers of The Lewis County Scoop?
Lewis County residents will benefit from reading about timely topics that they have concerns and questions about. They can ensure that this information is coming from a trustworthy, local source that is available for them to reach out to privately to ask clarifying questions if interested.

 Fun & Light-hearted

If you could have a coffee chat with any historical figure, who would it be and why?
I have always been interested in the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King and would love to have an hour to pick his brain on how our Country can continue to persevere and move forward.

Do you have a favorite book or movie related to finance or investing that you’d recommend?
One of my favorite finance books is “The Richest Man in Babylon” that provides foundational advice on how to save and invest and achieve personal financial freedom. One of my favorite movies would be “The Big Short” that is entertaining but also does a great job of explaining the 2008 financial crisis.

What’s one financial tip or piece of advice you wish everyone knew?
“You don’t know what you don’t know.”

 Final Thoughts:

Is there anything else you’d like the readers of The Lewis County Scoop to know about you, both personally and professionally?
I love living and working in our local area and am proud to give back to the community I grew up in. I would love the opportunity to sit down with you and your family to discuss the ways we could partner together to help you reach your goals!
