Wildcats Battle to 1-1 Draw with No. 5 William Penn
Canton, MO – The Culver-Stockton Men’s Soccer team opened conference play against No. 5 William Penn on Saturday, battling to a hard-fought 1-1 draw with the nationally ranked Statesmen.
The first half was controlled by William Penn, who fired 11 shots compared to just three from the Wildcats. Still, Culver’s defense held firm, and the match went to halftime scoreless.
Early in the second half, momentum swung when the Wildcats were awarded a penalty in the box. Freshman Irgen Hasanaj stepped up and buried the kick at the 48:44 mark for his third goal of the season, putting Culver-Stockton in front.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Statesmen answered just two minutes later. At 50:46, William Penn earned a penalty of their own, and sophomore Albert Feixes converted to even the match at 1-1.
From there, the game opened up into a back-and-forth battle. Culver-Stockton flipped the script by outshooting the Statesmen 10-7 in the second half, but couldn’t find the finishing touch. William Penn continued to press, but Wildcat goalkeeper Ricardo Fichsbach came up big with several key stops to preserve the tie.
The Wildcats moved to 1-1-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. Head coach Tyler Hamilton praised his team’s effort against a top opponent.
“Up-and-down, absolutely that game was a rollercoaster of emotions. It was a rollercoaster of play. But it was awesome to see our guys battle for 90 minutes against the number five team in the nation. I can’t ask for any more—the heart, the desire was there.”
Culver-Stockton continues conference action at home on Wednesday, September 10th, against Park University with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Hamilton said his team will look to build off the result.
“It was the post-game conversation. We got to use this to build. We work, work, work, and we had some up-and-down results with our non-conference schedule, so now it matters,” Hamilton said. “These guys dug in and got a well-earned point today. Now it’s about taking it to Park on Wednesday and hopefully getting 3 points.”
