My Submission for Quincy Teams Name…The Quincy Atoms

While being sick at home, I struggled to sleep at home and so I laid in bed and wondered “What should the Quincy Baseball Team’s name be.”

In August of 2023 it was announced the Gems would not play in QU in 2024. But due to not finding a new home the Gems did not appear in the 2024 season. Culver-Stockton head coach and Gems Field Manager Brad Gyorko’s would manage the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes for the season.

But in the summer of 2024 many rumors and rumbles would cross the Gem City about the return of a team. And it was made official when Golden Rule Entertainment, who own the Lucky Horseshoes, would announce the return of summer ball to Quincy.

The Quincy Gems allowed for many college kids to improve their talents. A lot of Culver-Stockton Wildcats could go and improve. While coaches of the local area could use it to try and recruit athletes to their school.

The Name

A lot of people are thinking of names related to the river. I think most people probably just want the Gems back. Keep what’s worked. For me I think the team needs a new identity to wash away the bad leave of the team. It was just so sudden and out of the blue. This in no way means I hold a hatred for the old team. I interned for the Gems in the summer of 2022. It was a great time and experience. It’s just for me it’s time for a new identity.

So what would my preferred name be for this team? Well I reached deep into my history knowledge and thought of the Quincy Atoms. Now I hear you asking “Why the Atoms?” Well for one it sounds like Adams like the county in which Quincy is placed in. So that pretty obvious. But the main reason for the Quincy Atoms. Is because of Quincy, Illinois native Paul Tibbetts.

The History

Tibbetts was born in Quincy February 23rd, 1915 to Paul Tibbetts Sr and Enola Gay Tibbetts. Tibbetts would enlist with the Army win 1937. On August 6th, 1945 Tibbets would fly a B-29 Superfortress over Hiroshima and would drop the first atomic bomb on the city in an attempt to end WWII and avoid a mainland invasion of Japan.

Controversy

Now I know picking this name can have some controversy as there is more recent debate about the use of the atomic bombs. Was it necessary, was it a show of power to the USSR instead of a way to end the war? Did this decision to end many Japanese life save many allied troops and Japanese life? While these are still great debate amongst many I feel that it shouldn’t stir enough controversy to start a riot or anything.

My Thoughts for the Team

My ideas I have for the team are some great ones for the identity. Anytime a player hits a home run the PA can play the bomb whistle sound effect that transitions into some kind of song to get everyone fired up.

Another idea I had. A glow in the dark game. When I think atomic I think radiation and I think glowing green. So a glow in the dark exhibition game would be awesome. I’d love to see the team rock some neon green uniforms.

I even started creating a logo that could implement the old Gems into the new age of Quincy Baseball.

While it’s not the best its merely a concept of what they can do with this team and a name like the Atoms. Another thought I had for a logo is a mushroom cloud logo with the gem in the mushroom of the cloud.

A lot of people I’ve talked to like the name. So what do you think. Can you get behind the Quincy Atoms?????

Press Conference

While typing up an article. It was announced that the ownership group Golden Rule Entertainment announced a press conference for Friday November 15th at 11 AM. The conference open to media and public will be held at the Town and Country inn & suites in Quincy.
