E. H. Smith, 75 of Lewistown, Missouri, surrounded by his entire family, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Earl Herbert Smith, Jr. was born on July 5, 1948 the son of Earl H. and Mary E. Gordon Smith, Sr. in Kirksville, Missouri.

He found his lifelong partner in Judy VanMeter, and they were united in marriage on August 17th, 1968, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ewing, MO. Recently, they joyously celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, having been together for over 60 years. Their bond was incredibly strong, and their love for each other was truly extraordinary.

E.H. retired from Lewis County C-1 in 2010 after 36 years in education. While in the Lewis County C-1 School District he held many positions and wore many hats. He was an Industrial Arts and Drivers Education teacher, a baseball and basketball coach, Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, Transportation Director, Special Services Director, New Building Coordinator, Finance Director, and the Assistant to the Superintendent. Prior to his tenure at C-1, he spent 1 year at Harmony High School in Farmington IA and 2 years at St. Charles High School in St. Charles, MO. During this same time period, he owned Van-S’ Simmental with his father-in-law, Olin VanMeter and owned Holbert Sales and Service in Lewistown, MO in the early 80’s.

E.H. was a 1966 graduate of Lewistown High School and a 1970 graduate of Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, MO where he earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Industrial Arts.

He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ewing. He served on the Parish Council and also served in many ministries within the church and attended the White House Retreat on multiple occasions. He was a board member for Lewis County C-1 School District, Heartland Resources, Wider Opportunities, Lewis County Water District, and was a member of the Highland Booster Club and MSTA. He and his wife, Judy, were volunteers for Hadlee’s Hope and the Nutrition Center. They both found great joy in helping others in times of need.

E.H. was an incredibly loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. His family meant the world to him, and he made sure they knew if by expressing his love every chance he got. Spending time with his loved ones brought him immense joy, and he cherished every moment shared together. When he wasn’t with his family, E.H. found solace in his hobbies of putting puzzles together, gardening, yard work, cooking, canning, playing cards with cousins, and watching Cardinal baseball.  

He is survived by his wife, Judy Smith of Lewistown, MO; three children, Matt (Kristi) Smith of Hannibal, MO, Jason (Carrie) Smith of Eolia, MO and Karissa (Chris) Moore of Columbia, MO; four grandchildren, Coleman Smith, Kendall Smith, Carson Moore and Carlie Moore; sister in law, Martha Ann Smith Jones of Canton, MO; sister in law and brother in law, Barb and Bill Smith of Monticello, MO; and several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Don Derek Smith, brother, Marvin Smith, sister and brother in laws, Clara (Charles) Durall and Gertrude (Ed) Mahoney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 10:00 AM at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ewing, Missouri led by Father Callistus Okoroji. Following the burial in the Queen of Peace Cemetery, there will be a meal for family and friends at the church hall.

Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 PM with a prayer service at 4:30 PM at Arnold’s Funeral Home in Canton, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to the Highland High School Athletics.
