Ray English Obituary


Ray English, 99 of Quincy, Illinois and formerly of Canton, Missouri passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

The son of Oval and Eula Lasswell English was born on October 22, 1926 at Williamstown, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Jean F. Selway on November 23, 1950 at Williamstown, Missouri.  She preceded him in death on April 14, 2012.

Ray served as a Medic in the U.S. Army during World War II.  Early in life, he farmed with his dad.  He worked at Canton Lock and Dam 20 and was Assistant Lockmaster at Keokuk Lock and Dam 19.  He loved to go dancing with Jean at the American Legion post dances held in Keokuk and Quincy.  Ray and his brothers started Riverbend subdivision outside of Canton, where he and Jean lived for many years.  He enjoyed taking care of his yard and home.

He is survived by his daughter, Cathy English (Scott Skarin) of Hamilton, Il.; a granddaughter, Allison (Joshua) Neeley of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; and three great-granddaughters, Rowan, Micah and Maren; and several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers, Bernard and Lowell English.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton, Missouri with Rev. Brian Stone officiating.  Military Honors will be provided by Otto Bruner Post #170.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post #41 of Keokuk, Iowa.
