Heated Action at Lee County Speedway
Donnelson, Iowa — The Independence Weekend race at Lee County Speedway was action-packed. 67 cars, 6 classes, fireworks, and an appearance by Ken Schrader made for an awesome night of racing in Iowa.
The features got started with the IMCA Stock Cars, where West Burlington’s John Oliver Jr. charged from seventh to pick up the win and a trip to victory lane in the #05JR. Burlington’s #12 Chad Krogmeier started on the pole but fell to second, holding that spot to the checkered flag. Casen Keller, out of Indianola, IA, kept the #71x firmly in third for the entire race.

Following up was the IMCA Modifieds. An early caution in the race allowed the #50 Jace Eckrich to move from third to the lead and take the win and a trophy back to Oxford, IA. But Austen Becerra wouldn’t make it easy, as the Carthage native challenged Eckrich after climbing five spots from seventh, taking the #22 to a second-place finish. Quincy’s Mark Burgtorf in the #03B finished third.

The IMCA Late Models took to the track. Tommy Elston #54 out of Keokuk, IA, put on a dominant performance, keeping his pole spot the entire race. Quincy’s Jackson Frankel took advantage of a late caution to move to second in the #2, and Quincy’s Jake Griffin in the #79 climbed from seventh and held third to the finish.

11 drivers competed for the IMCA Northern SportMod feature. Cole Gillenwater made a dominant drive in the 10C as he heads home to Keokuk with a feature win. Oxford’s Bryson Eckrich in the 56 climbed from fifth and picked up a second-place finish. Brandon Dale drove the #12D to third for the Arbela, MO native.

The Mini Hauler Truck class is a staple of Lee County Speedway. A quick 10-lap race saw Nick Wilkerson dominate in the #44 to a feature win. Dawson Tipps climbed from fourth to claim second in the #16, and Hayden Delzell held on for third in the race.

Lastly, the IMCA Sports Compact would finish the night with a 10-lap race. Burlington’s Tim Schnathorst would move from second to first for a feature win in the #63. Track local Brandon Reu would move from sixth to finish in second in the #27. And Luke Fraise of Houghton, IA would climb six spots to finish in third.

Lee County Speedway will be back in action on July 10th for the Lee County Fair race, as they will see some sprint cars invade Lee County. The Sprint Invaders point series will return to the area for high-octane sprint car action.
