Personal Testimony of Pastor Tony Stottlemyre

I was raised in a Christian home and taught all the things that good Christian young men were supposed to do.  At the age of eleven I went forward in a revival meeting because the preacher said if I wanted to go to heaven when I died to come forward, so I did.  He prayed, I was baptized a few weeks later and that was about it…..

so I thought.

Church was not really a big part of my life until I was about 17 years old, then I became very active in the youth group in our church.  I felt that something was missing and didn’t know what it was.  At age 19, I felt God’s leading into the ministry.  I got married and started attending Christ Unlimited Bible Institute.  I graduated in 1981.

It was during this time I found myself hitting bottom.  My young marriage was in trouble and our finances were low.  In 1983 I went back to my home church and tried to hide for about two years.  Still feeling that something was missing I filled my time with as many jobs in the church I could do or was asked to do.  I was a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and assistant music director, I served on the missions committee, became the youth pastor, got involved with the association, and on and on it went.

In 1993 after four mission’s trips to the Dakotas I felt God leading me and my family to do missions there.  October 1, 1993 we moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to help with a new church plant.  It was there that I became the interim pastor of that new church plant after the original church planter left.

On June 6th, 1995 I traveled to Bismarck, North Dakota for some Supervision Training by the North American Mission

Board geared towards supervising summer missionaries.  While at the training, something happened to me that I will never forget.

God spoke to me about needing to be saved.

Since I thought I already was saved, I argued with Him all night until early morning.  I used my experience as an eleven year old boy as evidence of testimony.  I argued, how could I preach, teach, minister, and do all the things I had done “without being saved”.  God told me that all of those deeds or works don’t save people…but a relationship with Jesus did.

I had tried to work my way to heaven all those years and didn’t even realize what I was doing.  I fell down on my knees at the edge of the bed in that motel room and prayed for myself and asked Jesus to save me, and He did.

All those years I felt something was missing, in my ministry, my marriage and in my life, all along it was a real relationship with Jesus.  God never gave up on me, even when I thought I was already saved, He kept trying to get through to me.  Thank God, I am saved, I received hope, peace, and power that I had never known.

Since June 6th of 1995, I have grown because all the things and knowledge that had been stored up for years finally made sense.  God made the picture come into focus and I never cease to give thanks to God for never giving up on me.

Since God brought me peace, He has used me in various ways to bring healing to hurting and dying churches to revitalize them with renewed vision and hope for a better future.  I pray that God will use me to grow His Kingdom wherever I serve.  I pray that God will bless you as He has me.

Praise His Holy Name!
