Canton City Council Board Meeting March 16th, 2026


CANTON, MO-  *City of Canton regular board meeting key notes held on March 16, 2026

Mayor Fretwell called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Aldermen McKenzie, Phillips, Martin, McDermott, and Crenshaw were present, with Alderman Janney absent. 

The board discussed water plant power glitches involving REC. Mayor Fretwell discussed filing a complaint, and Attorney Smith said he would check whether REC is regulated for that type of complaint. Attorney Smith also suggested contacting a Missouri congressman, and Mayor Fretwell said he would follow up.

The board approved Alissa Burger as a new member of the Library Board. 

The compliance officer topic ended due to lack of a motion. 

The minutes also state that when the city receives a nuisance complaint, it is to be given to Attorney Smith along with all listed complaints and pictures, and then Attorney Smith will start the legal notice process.

In other business, Mayor Fretwell gave an update on the TAP project after being asked about progress as a citizen. He said the city has all easements and paperwork turned in and is waiting on MECO to begin the bidding process, and MECO has stated they want to start this summer. 

Public Works Director Kell noted a complaint about flickering lights at Martin Park and said it will be addressed as soon as possible. 

The police committee reported on grants being applied for, and the finance committee reported it is working on the 2026–2027 budget.
