Canton and Highland Athletes Compete at State Track and Field


Jefferson City, MO – The Highland and Canton track and field teams competed in the MSHSAA State Track and Field Championships for Classes 1–3 in Jefferson City. Canton qualified two athletes for Class 1, while Highland sent multiple athletes and four relay teams to compete in Class 2.

The two-day meet featured a mix of preliminaries and finals on Day 1, followed by a full slate of championship races and field events on Day 2. Both schools wrapped up their seasons with strong efforts on the state’s biggest stage.

DAY ONE – May 23

CANTON

Sophia Slater – Triple Jump Finals
The junior finished 14th in the girls triple jump with a distance of 9.30 meters.

Dannica Lewis – 100m Hurdles Prelims
The sophomore placed 16th in the preliminaries of the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.77 seconds.

HIGHLAND

Lane Hinton – 100m Dash Prelims
The senior ran a personal best of 11.14 seconds in the prelims of the 100 meter dash, placing 9th overall and just missing the finals.

Boys 4x200m Relay – Prelims
The Cougars placed 4th in their heat with a time of 1:31.60, good for 5th overall and a spot in the finals.

Boys 4x100m Relay – Prelims
The Highland boys 4×100 meter relay team placed third in their heat and finished fifth overall with a time of 43.71 seconds, earning a spot in the Class 2 finals on Day 2.Boys 4×100 Relay Team Members:

Chevie Sharpe – 400m Prelims
Highland junior Chevie Sharpe earned a spot in the 400-meter finals after placing fourth overall in the prelims. She posted a time of 59.06 seconds and will compete for a state medal on Day 2.

Charlie Evans – 400m Prelims
Highland senior Charlie Evans ran a personal record in the boys 400-meter prelims, clocking in at 51.83 seconds. He placed 7th in his heat and 12th overall, missing a spot in the finals.

Christopher Gaus – Long Jump Finals
Highland junior Christopher Gaus competed in the Class 2 boys long jump finals, finishing 13th overall. His best mark of the day was a jump of 5.93 meters.

Highland Girls 4×400 Relay – Prelims

The Highland girls 4×400 meter relay team placed 2nd in their heat and 3rd overall in the prelims with a time of 4:09.87 — a new school record. They advanced to the finals on Day 2.

Highland Boys 4×400 Relay (Prelims)
The Highland boys 4×400 meter relay team placed 7th in their heat and 11th overall with a time of 3:34.12 — a new personal record for the group.

DAY TWO – May 24 (LIVE)

Highland Boys 4×200 Relay (Finals)
The Highland boys 4×200 meter relay team placed 6th in the Class 2 state finals with a time of 1:32.71.

Chevie Sharpe – 1600 Meter (Finals)
Junior Chevie Sharpe won the Class 2 Girls 1600-meter run, making a move on the back stretch of the final lap to take the lead and finish with a time of 5:15.80. Adding a new best personal record and new school record.

Highland Boys 4×100 Relay (Finals)
The Highland boys 4×100 meter relay team placed 5th in the Class 2 state finals with a time of 44.36 seconds.

Chevie Sharpe – Girls 400 Meter (Finals)
Highland junior Chevie Sharpe placed 4th in the Class 2 girls 400 meter finals, clocking a time of 58.71 seconds. It was her second top-five finish of the day.

Bailie Crist – Girls Javelin Throw (Finals)
Highland junior Bailie Crist finished 4th in the Class 2 girls javelin finals with a personal record and new school record throw of 37.32 meters.

Chevie Sharpe – Girls 800 Meter (Finals)
Chevie Sharpe claimed her third top-five finish of the day with a 4th place result in the Class 2 girls 800 meter finals, recording a time of 2:23.47.

Highland Girls 4×400 Relay (Finals)
The Highland girls 4×400 meter relay team secured a third-place finish in the Class 2 state finals with a time of 4:09.93.

OVERALL

Highland Boys Team Finish
The Highland boys track and field team tied for 37th place in the Class 2 team standings with 7 points, matching Valle Catholic High School.

Highland Girls Team Finish
The Highland girls track and field team finished 6th in the Class 2 team standings with 31 points, following South Shelby, another Clarence Cannon Conference competitor.
