Highland Cougars Pick up Win Over Raiders
Lewistown, MO – The Highland Cougars picked up their first win of the season. Taking down the Quincy Notre Dame Raiders JV squad in the Consolation championship at the Highland Tournament and picking up a 74-56 victory over the Raiders.
The Cougars, under first-year head coach Matt Thomas, have continued to search for their first win. As coach Thomas has told his guys, “Winning isn’t normal, it’s not easy.” He continues, “I’m really proud of those guys; nobody’s given up.”
The Cougars came out of the gate fast and put up a few early points. Despite the early start, the Raiders would find ways to stay in the game. Even bringing the game to a point deficit at the end of the first, 14-13. However, the Cougars would put up a 22-point second to pull away at the half, 36-28. The Cougars would hold the lead the rest of the game and walk out with the victory and medals. 74-56.
Senior Briscoe Post finished the night with 20 points. This scoring comes after a few adjustments after the Clark County game, where Post was held to the free-throw line for five points. “Not shooting a lot of threes tonight,” Says Post, “Mainly just staying inside the paint, posting up, allowing my teammates to find me, facilitating, passing out to the baseline.”
The Cougars look forward to their home game against cross-county rivals, the Canton Tigers, on Tuesday, January 13th, with a 7:30 tip-off following the girls’ game. That game will be broadcast live on the Lewis County Scoop’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
Coach Thomas discusses his excitement for the Lewis County Shootout. “It’ll be my first one, the rivalry is always fun, I don’t think there is any doubt about that any time you play your rival.” Coach Thomas continues, “I think that will be fun, at our place, we already got the bleachers pulled out upstairs, in anticipation of it.”
