As I contemplate this time of year, I find that as I observe what goes on, it is something of a mystery. People scramble around, gripping about the crowds and the stores filled with other people getting in the way of their “shopping.” Isn’t this time of year supposed to reflect the Christmas story? I don’t mean to perpetuate the conflict we feel, but I believe that Christmas is supposed to be about Christ. His coming to the earth as a baby and starting His journey to the cross.

Many see Christmas as a burden. ‘I have to buy…” It’s not about buying, its about a God who so loved His people that He sent a Savior to redeem them from the penalty of their many sins. It’s about the love that showed up that first Christmas morning and made a way for all people everywhere to have the opportunity to have their sins forgiven. You see, Christmas is a glorious time in which we celebrate the birth of a Savior. Not just a Savior to the people of Israel, but to all people. God came in the form of a man, in the person of Jesus Christ to reconcile all of us to a loving and caring God. He came to bring us peace. In fact we find in the book of Luke a chorus of angels telling a group of shepherds; “Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” That peace and goodwill was initiated by God towards those of us who had broken our relationship with Him by our sins. And His response was one of love, one that demonstrated a God who so loved those He created, that He made a way to satisfy the requirement of the Law of God, but also made a way to restore that broken relationship. Wow! What a God.

Today, we don’t celebrate the shopping season. We celebrate the Savior. We celebrate restoration. Think about it. What comes to your mind at Christmas? Is it having to buy everyone a present(s) or is it a praise and thanksgiving for a Savior who paid it all for you? My hope and prayer this Christmas season is that you find “peace” and “joy.” In fact, the apostle John stated in 1 John 1:4, “And these thing we write unto you that your joy may be full.” What things? John wrote about the things that spoke of why Jesus came and lived and suffered and died and rose again.

Shopping might be something that society promotes. Because its mainly influenced by “making a buck.” But, you can make a difference and influence those around you to be reminded of the real reason for the season. May you have a wonderfully blessed Christmas season. And remember, God loves you!
