Abby Lay Signs Letter of Intent with Blazers
Lewistown, MO — For Senior Abby Lay, John Wood Community College was a top choice in her initial visit. “I was very interested from when I went to visit, and it really intrigued me.” Another factor was being able to stay close to her family. “I love my family, so I just wanted to stay close to home and just be able to do something special so close.”
Abby Lay signed her National Letter of Intent with the Blazers on Friday, January 30th, in the Highland High Commons, in front of the trophy case. Where the dual sport athlete, in softball and basketball, looks to continue her softball career. Joined by friends, family, peers, and teammates, she celebrates her accomplishments.
A major accomplishment sat front and center on the table. The 2024 Class 2 State championship trophy. Abby Lay was the starting pitcher for the Highland Lady Cougars in the 2024 season, finishing the season 24-5, and boasting a 1.29 ERA, while also batting a .454 batting average. Abby would put on a dominant performance in the playoffs, not giving up a single earned run, culminating in a 4-1 victory over the Mid-Buchanan Lady Dragons to become State Champions.
However, after the season, Abby Lay suffered an injury that prevented her from playing basketball, and many wondered whether she would be back in time for the following softball season, but Abby’s drive and determination pushed her, and she returned for the first practice of the season.
While still battling the injury, Lay would lead the team again, post a 3.17 ERA, and bat .367. Leading the team to back-to-back District titles, falling in the Sectional round to South Harrison.
John Wood Community College Blazers of Quincy, Ill., compete in the Mid-West Athletic Conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
We want to congratulate Abby Lay on her achievements and wish her luck at the next level of play.
