Strong Defense Helps Lady Cougars and Cardinals Pick Up Wins

Highland High School would celebrate senior night as the Highland Cougars would take on the South Shelby Cardinals in a Clarence Canon Conference showdown.

Girls Game

Both state ranked (8)Highland Lady Cougars and (4)South Shelby Lady Cardinals would battle it out. Both teams would put on a strong defensive clinic. The end result would be a Highland win with a score of 38-35. Despite the low scoring game it was an incredible game to attend.

Junior Chevy Sharpe would lead the offense with 10 points. Josie Murphy would follow up with nine. Meanwhile South Shelby would get led by senior Callie McWilliams with 14 points. Junior Charlie Roush would follow with 10.

After the game Coach Jaco asked about the momentum they have going and if it could stop “Hopefully never, we understand how tough our schedule is and we escape Monroe City. Didn’t play our best. We knew coming into tonight that we couldn’t have a showing like that.”

Highland will go on the road for their last non-conference game against North Callaway. They will then travel to (3)Centralia. Then return home for Macon and (10)Palmyra to close the season. They will play districts at Highland.

Boys Game

The South Shelby Cardinals would escape the Highland Cougars as the Cougars defense would keep the game within 10 until the fourth quarter. Cardinals take the win 72-44. A very pressure heavy Cardinal defense would force the Cougars to turnover the ball and make some heavy mistakes.

Freshman Brighton Johnson would lead the Cougars offence with 13 points. Seniors Lane Hinton and Kane Stegeman would follow with 11 points. South Shelby’s Noah Wilt would lead the Cardinals with 20 points as Preston Elsen would follow with 13.

The Boys will follow the same schedule as the girls. However their district tournament will take place in Palmyra instead of Highland.
