Sharpe Signs to Continue Basketball at John Wood Community College

Lewistown, MO — Multi-sport athlete Chevie Sharpe definitely had her options. A member of the color guard, cheerleading, basketball, and track & field. A state champion in track and a school record holder of the 3200m run. A record that has stood since 1985, held by Nikki Phillips. Chevie would break it at the Palmyra track meet on April 9.

“It’s so funny because we were just like, let’s just try and break it. So we did it, and it, well, the first time I didn’t get it, but the second time I finally did, I got to race with the boys, so that was nice. But yeah, it was actually really cool, but I was like, I’m not doing this again. That’s a rough race.”

Chevie is also a very accomplished basketball player. Just this past year, the Highland Lady Cougars won four tournament titles, including a district title, and even put the number one team in the state and the eventual Class 3 state champion on the ropes in the opening sectional round.

However, Chevie still had a decision to make. Where to continue her career and what sport to participate in? Needless to say, the choice of sport shocked many people.

Today, Chevie Sharpe was joined by friends and family at the Highland High Commons, where she made her decision to continue her basketball career at John Wood Community College. As Chevie discusses what drew her to continue her basketball season.

“You know, I’ve just played it my entire life, and it’s had a big impact on me, and I just knew that I wanted to keep going at the collegiate level if I could, so I’m very excited to get this opportunity.”

She will look to bolster the roster with her perimeter style of play. However, Chevie still feels there’s much to work on.

“Definitely trying to work on my ball handling and still work on my defense and three-point shooting for sure.”

John Wood Community College Women’s Basketball Coach Kelly Koetters is excited to have Chevie on her roster with other local talent.

“Yeah, and that’s something that we’re trying to do. We’re trying to keep the talent local. There is a lot of great talent around this area, and I’m super excited that we’re able to keep Chevie close to home.”

Koetters says that the perimeter is a big factor she’s looking to fill and feels Chevie will do just that.

Yeah, because one of the things that we were really looking to do for next season is bring in some shooters from the outside. That was one of the parts of our games that was missing this year. So when I got to watch Chevy play, that’s really what stuck out to me at first. Just the way she played. And then the more I got to watch her, just her intensity, the way that she interacts with her teammates on the floor, what she does on the defensive end, her speed. She’s just constantly going and giving it her heart. So that’s definitely going to fit into what we’re trying to do over at John Wood.”

Needless to say, Chevie is what John Wood is looking for and will definitely look to make an impact.
